I recently attended a consulting summit where some of the top consultants in the nation meet for an annual conference. One of the biggest takeaways for me, and what seemed like the theme of the weekend, was “head trash”. We do it often, and it really needs to stop.

What is head trash? Telling yourself you are not good enough or efficient enough. Convincing yourself that you’ll never be like that perfect dentist, or you’re too young or too old, or you’re too … we could go on for days, right? A speaker at the summit indicated that approximately 80% of our thoughts are negative. We need to quit doing that to ourselves and start building our confidence.

When you wake up in the morning and are dreading going into your office, or you feel like your practice is in a rut, the head trash starts. Instead of listening to those negative thoughts, take time to look in the mirror and ask yourself some questions. Is it me? Is there something in my life or someone or something at the office that needs to change so I can feel energized again? What can I change so that I will look forward to going into my practice every day?

Take time to evaluate your routine. Are you getting the amount of rest you need? Are you taking care of your health? Is there a team member causing this dread? If so, it is up to you to initiate the change. Maybe yoga or another form of exercise would help clear your head and re-energize you. Perhaps taking the time for a hobby, or changing your diet. If you have a toxic team member, it is equally important to address that situation as well.

Once you’ve taken the time to listen to yourself, take the time to listen to your staff. Encourage them and help them maintain a positive atmosphere in the office. Remove that trash from your head and fill it with good, positive thoughts every day.
